WSS ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

 

Definitions:

 

Excused Absence:  An absence, tardiness or early departure may be excused if due to personal illness, illness or death in the family, impassable roads due to inclement weather, religious observance, quarantine, required court appearances, or attendance at health clinics.  An excused absence requires a phone call to the school the day of the absence and a note from the parent/guardian must be received by the school within 48 hours after the last consecutive absence. 

 

Unexcused Absence: An absence, tardiness or early departure is considered unexcused if the reason for the lack of attendance does not fall into the above categories (examples include but are not limited to family vacation, hunting, babysitting, hair cut, tanning, shopping, oversleeping, etc.) and is sanctioned by a parent or guardian.  Every absence will be recorded as unexcused unless the school receives written notice of the absence.

 

Tardiness:  Tardiness will be considered if a student enters the school after the school day has started (8:55 a.m.).  If a student enters school after 11:20 a.m., the student will be considered absent.

 

Record Keeping:

The record of each student’s presence, absence, tardiness and early departure shall be kept in a register of attendance and will be entered as “excused”, “unexcused”, and “tardy”.

Registration of attendance is taken during homeroom by 8:55 a.m. and entered into the school data collection system.  Attendance by class period is then recorded by teachers thereafter.  Teachers can submit period by period attendance at the time of instruction or at the end of the day.  If a teacher is absent for the day, the classroom substitute teacher shall record the attendance and turn it in to the appropriate attendance officer.

 

Notice of Minimum Attendance Standard/Intervention Strategies:

In order to ensure that parents/guardians and students are informed of the District’s policy and our school’s attendance procedures, the following guidelines shall be followed:

  1. Copies of the District’s Attendance Policy will be made available to parents.
  2. Our school counselor will review the District’s Attendance Policy and Attendance Procedures with students who have excessive and/or unexcused absences, tardiness or early departures.  Further, appropriate student support services/personnel within the District, as well as the possible collaboration/referral to community support services and agencies, will be implemented when students exhibit attendance problems.  

Notice of Students who are Absent, Tardy or Depart Early Without Proper Excuse:

Our school counselor shall notify the parent/guardian of a student who is absent, tardy or departs early without proper excuse.  The notification will occur as follows:

-       10 days of absence/tardy/early departures: a phone call home

-       15 – 20 days of unexcused absences: a formal notice from the principal

-       20 – 25 days of unexcused absences:  a second formal notice from the principal

-       25+ of unexcused absences: a third formal notice from the principal

 

**Note:  If your son/daughter has had a history of significant unexcused absences, the number of absences above and letters will change at the school’s discretion.

 

VISITORS

ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE OFFICE UPON ENTRANCE INTO THE BUILDING.

Visitors are required to stop at the main office PRIOR to going to any other part of the building. Parents/guardians are NOT to go directly to the cafeteria to pick up a child from lunch, but instead:

  1. FIRST, report to the main office and sign in.
  2. Obtain a name tag from a secretary and then go to the cafeteria to get your child.
  3. When leaving, please sign your child out and leave your name tag with the secretary.

CLASSROOM VISITATIONS

The following parameters will be in effect for any person who wishes to visit a Le Roy Central School District classroom.

  1. Permission must be obtained through the office of the principal for classroom visitations. Conditions of the visit (date, time, expectations of visitor's classroom behavior, etc.) will be outlined by the prior to the visit and strictly adhered to by the visitor.
  2. Visitations will be for observation only. Use of camcorders and other electronic devices are subject to the principal's discretion.
  3. Visitors may not interfere with the educational program. If parents/guardians or other visitors have questions or concerns, they may arrange for a separate conference with the teacher.
  4. Building principals are authorized to take appropriate action to prevent unauthorized visitors from entering the building or loitering on school grounds (see Policy 65310).
  5. Members of the Board of Education who visit schools individually and not as part of any official Board visitation, must follow the same procedures required of other citizens. 

BICYCLE/SKATEBOARD/ROLLERBLADE RULES

Riding bicycles, skateboarding and/or rollerblading on school walks or grounds, including Hartwood Park is prohibited. Failure to abide by this rule may result in a consequence. For bicycle riders, failure to abide by this rule may result in denying the student the privilege of bringing his/her bicycle onto school grounds. Bicycles should be left in the bike racks provided AND LOCKED.

BUS SCHEDULE

The elementary school bus picks up children in grades 1-6 who reside 3/4 mile or more from the school they legally attend. Eligibility for transportation is measured from the child's legal address.

ALL KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ARE BUSSED. Kindergarten students will be advised by letter, in advance of the opening of school, as to transportation.

Children will be picked up with enough time for the school bus to arrive before the school day begins. The time may vary a little; it is extremely important for every child to be waiting by the road, ready to board the bus immediately upon its arrival. For approximate time of passing a particular house, the school office or bus driver may be consulted.

BUS STUDENTS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED TO LEAVE THE BUSES, OTHER THAN AT THEIR OWN HOMES OR AT SCHOOL UNLESS WRITTEN PERMISSION IS RECEIVED FROM THE PARENTS TO GO ELSEWHERE. This is a safety precaution and must be adhered to.

NO STUDENT MAY RIDE ON ANY BUS EXCEPT THAT TO WHICH HE/SHE IS REGULARLY ASSIGNED. This is a reasonable request when we consider the number of students who depend on the buses daily.

Asking to change the location of children being picked up and delivered each day should be kept to a minimum, whenever possible. To avoid confusion, children should be picked up and delivered to the same location every day.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

All children are required to participate in Physical Education UNLESS EXCUSED BY A WRITTEN STATEMENT FROM THE FAMILY PHYSICIAN.  All grades meet three times a week for 40 minutes.

Outdoor participation is dependent upon weather conditions. In order for Physical Education classes to be conducted outdoors, the fields must be dry and the temperature approximately 60 degrees. Sneakers and appropriately fitting clothing are required in all grades, for safety reasons. We need your help to ensure that students come appropriately dressed for physical education. Your child needs to be in sneakers in order to participate in physical education class. Therefore, clogs, sandals, jelly shoes, dress shoes and platform sneakers are unacceptable, as they are unsafe.

LOST AND FOUND

A lost and found box will be maintained in the main office. Articles found should be given to the main office. Pupils claiming lost articles may receive them from the secretary. If an article is not found immediately, pupils should inquire several times. Unclaimed articles are given to charitable organizations at the close of the school year.

PARENTS MAY ASSIST GREATLY IN THE RECOVERY OF LOST ITEMS BY PUTTING THE STUDENT'S NAME ON SUCH ITEMS AS: coats, sweaters, mittens, overshoes, rubbers, sneakers and lunch boxes. It would also be helpful to include the student's name on the familiar lunch bag. Check each item occasionally to be sure that the name is readable.

ATTIRE

The school can expect that all students will be dressed appropriately and in good taste for school and any respective school activities.

If, in the school's judgment, a student is dressed in a manner that is deemed distractive to other students or teachers in educational pursuit, then that student will be asked to change.

We ask that students refrain from wearing: halters, tank tops, spaghetti strap shirts, shirts that do not cover the student's waistline and shorts with less than a three inch inseam.
