Dispensing Medications at School

A school nurse is prohibited by NYS education law from dispensing medication to school children without a specific doctor’s order.  A written doctor's order with instructions for use and a parental signature is required for ALL medication given during school hours, this includes both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications.  OTC medications encompass a wide variety i.e. cough drops, antacids, eye drops, emollients, creams etc. that all require a doctor's order to be given at school. Orders DO NOT carry over from one school year to the next, new medication forms need to be completed and signed every year by a healthcare provider and parent/guardian.  Please use the link below to access our school district's medication form (or your healthcare provider may use their own acceptable form if desired).

Medication(s) must remain in their original properly labeled pharmacy or original over-the-counter (OTC) container. You can ask your pharmacist to give you a second identically labeled container for any prescription medications that will be taken at school. The parent/guardian is responsible for having the medication(s) delivered directly to the school in its properly labeled original container by an adult. Students are not allowed to carry any medication(s) to or from school.

We are unable to store medication over the summer. At the end of the school year a parent or designee MUST pick up their child’s unused medication or it will be discarded.

Please notify the health office regarding any changes to your child's health such as new medical diagnoses, surgeries, medication changes, newly discovered allergies etc.  This information is kept confidential and is available only to staff and special area teachers on a need to know basis.
